Work Place Injury and Retaliation
Each day in America, an average of 16 workers die and another 9,000 are injured from work related accidents. In Texas, many employers provide workers compensation insurance for their workers when accidents happen. If an employer carries worker’s compensation insurance in Texas, in many instances they are immune from liability. However, many more employers avoid the expense of insurance that would protect their workers. As a result, thousands of injured workers lose their ability to work, and have no way to support themselves and their loved ones.
As the cost of workers' compensation insurance rises, a disturbing number of companies act illegally, pressuring injured employees to hide their injuries and to avoid making an insurance claim. Many employees who make a claim are harassed, discriminated against, and fired. These practices are illegal and should not be allowed to continue.
Still other employers retaliate against honest workers who refuse to commit illegal or unsafe acts in the workplace. Many of these employees become "whistle-blowers" when they report illegal conduct. In Texas, there are laws against firing whistle-blowers, but many people are unaware of their rights.
